Because you just might get it. Aside from being a lame, but annoyingly catchy, Pussycat Dolls song, Be careful what you wish for is an old idiom; it can be found expressed in various folk tales and myths.
All of these folktales (I'll talk about specific instances in later posts) express the need to be specific. This is reflected in the Secret. The Secret tells you that you must ask for things you want in specifics and in positives.
For example: If you constantly think to yourself or talk about how you need money, than you will always need money. If you think and talk in the positive I have lots of money, even if it isn't true, money will come to you. The same goes for everything.
The idiom be careful what you wish or has become a bit skewed, and today means more to be careful about what you are wishing for, i.e. you may not really want it. But in regards to the Secret, the idiom can be interpreted as be careful how you wish; i.e. you may not be getting what you intended.
